After nearly 12 years of global operation, Apple’s mobile payment service is finally preparing to enter the Indian market. Reports suggest that Apple Pay could launch in India as early as October 2026. As the digital payment ecosystem in India continues to grow rapidly, the introduction of Apple’s tap-to-pay service could provide a seamless, card-based alternative for iPhone users across the country.
Expected Launch Timeline and Banking Partners
According to reports from Reuters and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is targeting an October 2026 release for its payment platform. Rather than a wide rollout, the tech giant is expected to take a phased approach by initially partnering with a single major bank. Axis Bank is reportedly positioned to be the first financial institution to integrate with Apple Pay. The service will likely debut with support for eligible Axis Bank credit cards.
While Axis Bank is expected to lead the launch, Apple is also currently in commercial discussions with other leading private lenders, including HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank. The addition of these banks would happen gradually, mirroring Apple’s strategy in several overseas markets.
How Apple Pay Will Work in India
Apple Pay transforms an iPhone or Apple Watch into a contactless digital wallet. Here is how the early phase of the rollout is expected to function for Indian users:
- Tokenised Cards: Instead of using physical plastic, users will add their eligible credit cards to the Apple Wallet app. The app generates a device-specific number and a unique transaction code, meaning the actual card number is never shared with the merchant or stored on Apple’s servers.
- Tap-to-Pay: To complete a transaction, users simply authenticate via Face ID or Touch ID and hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near a compatible NFC-enabled point-of-sale (POS) terminal.
- No Extra Apps Required: The integration happens at the system level, eliminating the need to open a specific banking or third-party payment app during checkout.

Will Apple Pay Support UPI?
The Indian digital payments landscape is overwhelmingly dominated by the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which handles billions of transactions a month. However, initial reports indicate that Apple Pay will not feature UPI integration at launch. Instead, Apple is focusing on building out its credit-card ecosystem. This means that while Apple Pay will work flawlessly at supermarkets, airports, and large retail stores equipped with contactless card machines, it will not initially function at smaller neighborhood shops that rely exclusively on printed UPI QR codes.

Why This Matters for the Indian Market
The introduction of Apple Pay arrives at a time when the Indian market is heavily reliant on apps like Google Pay and PhonePe. Apple’s entry brings a highly secure, frictionless payment method that is deeply integrated into its hardware. For the growing base of iPhone users in India, this launch bridges a long-standing feature gap. It provides a premium, secure alternative to carrying physical credit cards, potentially driving higher usage of NFC-based card payments across retail environments. As the service matures and potentially adds more banks and debit cards to its roster, it could significantly influence how premium smartphone users handle everyday transactions.
