Mercedes-AMG has just dropped a massive surprise for driving purists and collectors alike: the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung. As the second entry in the ultra-exclusive Mercedes-Benz Mythos Series (following the windshieldless PureSpeed), this limited-run coupe is built with a singular, uncompromising focus on maximum driving dynamics.
With production strictly limited to just 30 units globally—all of which are reportedly already sold out—the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung is destined to become an instant legend.
The V8 Returns: Power Meets Rear-Wheel Drive
Under the aggressively vented hood of the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung lies the extensively enhanced AMG M177 EVO 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine. This isn’t just any V8; it features a flat-plane crankshaft that reduces rotating mass, vastly improving revving characteristics and throttle response.
- Horsepower: 637 hp (646 PS, which gives the car its name)
- Torque: 627 lb-ft, available from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm
- 0-60 MPH: 3.9 seconds
- Top Speed: 193 mph
In a massive departure from the all-wheel-drive CLE 53 on which it is based, the CLE 646 is purely rear-wheel drive. The AMG Performance 4MATIC+ system was completely removed to shed weight and fundamentally alter the car’s dynamic character. Power is managed by a 9-speed automatic transmission and an electronically controlled limited-slip differential that optimizes traction and stability (while also allowing for controlled drifts).

Purpose-Built for the Track
The name “Spezialanfertigung” translates to “custom-made” in German, and AMG engineers took that to heart. This coupe is significantly lighter than its donor car, dropping about 375 pounds.
To handle the rigors of closed-circuit racing, Mercedes equipped the car with serious track-focused hardware:
- Advanced Cooling: Three separate cooling circuits ensure the engine, charge air, transmission, and the 48-volt mild-hybrid system stay optimal under heavy track use.
- Adjustable Suspension: Four-way adjustable damper technology allows drivers to independently configure low-speed and high-speed rebound and compression settings to tailor the chassis perfectly to the track.
- Ceramic Brakes: Stopping power comes from massive 16.5-inch internally ventilated and perforated ceramic discs with six-piston fixed calipers up front, and 14.2-inch discs in the rear.
- Aerodynamics: A unique wide-body concept expands the track width by 2.4 inches. It features an adjustable front diffuser, fender louvers, an integrated airflow channel, and a towering adjustable rear wing to keep the car glued to the tarmac.

A Stripped-Down, Hardcore Interior
The track-focused ethos continues inside the cabin. To maximize rigidity and save weight, the rear seats have been jettisoned in favor of an integrated roll cage. Insulation has been reduced, and the standard infotainment system was simplified. Drivers are held firmly in place by ultra-light bucket seats (with an optional Performance package adding six-point racing harnesses) and interface with the machine via a Dinamica microfiber steering wheel.
The Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung is a testament to what happens when engineers are allowed to chase maximum driving dynamics without compromise.
